Foliomag.com reports “Consumer magazine ad pages fell 7.4 percent during the first half, according to figures released today by the Publishers Information Bureau. Christian Bale as Batman for its most recent “Got Milk?” ad campaign. What brave soul would dare ask him that question in person? Got Milk showed lots of sexy ladies, now they bringing out the boys! Milkalicious! We all know it does a body good. If I were a little boy and my mom told me that if I drank milk I’ll grow into this type of body, I’d drink milk until I blew up and milked a few thousand cows myself! So parents have your children drink milk, but also tell them eating healthy and lifting weights will help create those sexy abs.

TOM FORD 2008 ADS BANNED

TOM FORD 2008 ADS

Tom Ford is in heat and not the way he likes it! The fashion designer is in hot water for his latest Spring/ Summer 2008 advertisement campaign. The Institute for Advertising Self-Discipline (IAP) has banned the designer’s racy eyewear ads in Italy claiming that the images are “markedly vulgar.” This time the designer went to another level exposing women and men in full frontal nudes, masturbating, having intercourse and grabbing each others privates. Is it too much to handle?

SEX SELLS: ADVERTISEMENTS

When reviewing designers two things are most important: Quality and Creativity. Many designers known or unknown know quality, but few can deliver to an audience. We’ve all heard the adage, “SEX SELLS.” But are designers selling too much SEX? And is this the way to go?

I strongly say, YES. I think a designer should take into consideration whom they create their designs for before they target their market. I find that the three most BOLD and DARING designers when it comes to Advertisements are Calvin Klein, Tom Ford and Diesel. They know what sells and if it is sex, then so be it. They know how to captivate the public’s eye and get the attention they want; those designers know that controversy is the best seller and that there isn’t such a thing as bad publicity. So, they do what they do and know best. But is it too racy?

No. It may be for you, but it is still ART. And we’re not in the 1920’s anymore and SEX isn’t a taboo. Or at least it should not be. I’m not saying that every designer should start making ads of people’s genitalia and posting them on billboards. It doesn’t constitute all designers and this method will not work for all, but it does work for some, and really well. Let’s take Guess for example, GUESS is a great brand, a company that recruits the most beautiful models I’ve ever seen and they do it with so much class and style that if they ever got too X-rated, it will just not sit well. It is not to say that other super sexy ads from other designers are not classy, more like, classy slutty, but it does it for them, others have to find the right fit… be it what it may.
