At the launch party of By Invitation Only, Betsey Johnson stated that she’d like to retire after her September 2009 show, “I should be retired. I’m basically screwing up because I’m not retired. I’d like to go in four days a month, something like that.”  It seems Johnson and her partner, Chantal Bacon want to rest, travel and enjoy life a lot more.  NYMag reports that Eric Sartori will be their successor as head designer. Sartori has worked for some of the most prominent designers in the industry such as Vera Wang, Hervé Léger, and Azzedine Alaïa. Johnson believes, “He is the one, he’s much better than I am.  He just has to Betsey-fy himself.”  Nonetheless, she will remain the company’s “mega-consultant”. The perfectionist didn’t think of retiring sooner because she’s somewhat of a control freak, as she felt nothing was right unless her or Bacon perfected it. But not anymore! She’s letting go and looking forward to enjoying her golden years.
