MAGAZINE SALES PLUMMETING: ADVERTISEMENTS MAGS vs. WEBSITES
Magazine sales are decreasing by the minute. Foliomag.com reports “Consumer magazine ad pages fell 7.4 percent during the first half, according to figures released today by the Publishers Information Bureau. Revenues were about $11.55 billion, down 3.1 percent from $11.9 billion over the same period last year.” The magazine industry is well aware that they are in a frail situation; the competition is rough and tough. And the INTERNET is the one to blame.
Many websites dedicate their site to a specific theme, as do many magazines whether they are about sex, love, parenting, politics or fashion. The convenience of advertising online outweighs advertising in the publishing industry. Advantages are that websites can publish news, advice, and celebrity gossip rapidly, while magazines must go through a printing process. Sites also charge a lot less. With the Internet, readers can quickly click on an ad, order their product or learn more about a company instantly, things that cannot be done with a paper copy of a magazine. With magazines, you can read them, but it’s going to cost you, a yearly subscription or a fee for one of anywhere from $3-$13, if not more for the pricey ones. With the Internet, you can click or enter the url of your favorite site, for FREE, at the comfort of your home, job or hotel and get your daily dose of your favorite subject at no cost to you. And that includes no piling of mags that will later go to the recycle bin.
Does this decline shock us? No. Will magazine ad sales continue to drop intensely in the future? Yes. Will magazines become obsolete? Never. The truth is bloggers need magazines as much as magazines need bloggers. We feed off of each other. We all inspire creativity and share one common goal: giving our readers tips on a concentrated subject. Magazines are also needed. You cannot bring your laptop everywhere you go. On the airplane, at the salon or doctor’s office the waiting time does go swiftly when you have a magazine at hand. They are informative and entertaining. But with electronic companies creating phones and small gadgets with easy internet access it makes it even more simple and effortless for you to log on. It is also too bothersome to walk around with heavy mags when you can conveniently obtain information right at your fingertips without carrying anything too heavy. Magazines will continue to suffer and websites will enjoy the gain of their loss. It’s going to get ugly, that’s the predictable future. But it’s not to say, magazines will disintegrate. There’s still a very strong market for both. Think of it, as sharing profits and not completely losing them.
